Extended Schools

The government sets out a core offer of services that schools should provide by 2010. The core offer includes:
* A varied range of activities including study support, sport and music clubs, combined with childcare in primary schools
* Parenting and family support
* Swift and easy access to targeted and specialist services
* Community access to facilities including adult and family learning, ICT and sports grounds.
Backwell School is an Extended School as it meets the core offer and beyond. The School provides a wide variety of extra curricular activities for students, study support, ‘FLAGS’ (Family Learning and Group Support) for Year 7 parents and access to our Parent Support Advisor.
The school is enjoyed by the community as a whole through the use of its wide range of facilities and adult learning.
The school works closely with parents, children and others to co-ordinate activities around the needs of the community.
As part of Family Learning Festival in October 2008, family learning taster sessions were held at Backwell School, outside venues, and the local feeder primary schools. These sessions gave families the opportunity to learn together in an informal setting.
Free Basic IT courses have been successfully running since March 2008 at venues across the local area including Yatton Library, Court de Wyck School and Backwell School. These courses have been set up in partnership with North Somerset Community Learning.
