At Backwell we aim to get students thinking about careers and developing employability skills straight from Year 7. This may be through Breakout activities, enterprise initiatives or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) projects. We also hold Career days at times where students are required to make decisions about their future: in Year 9 when they choose their options, Year 10 when they are making post 16 choices and in Year 12 for post 18 decisions.
Our annual Future Plans week for Year 12 students includes a visit to a local university as well as a day hearing from and talking to local employers and apprenticeship providers. We are always delighted to be joined by former students now pursuing interesting careers as apprentices in schools, aerospace companies and the world of finance.
We are developing our network of employers and will be giving other students the chance to work with guest speakers. If any parent/carer would like to come into school to talk about their career to students please do let us know.
We encourage all students to get involved in a range of activities outside of the curriculum to have experience to put on CVs and applications but also to help them decide what area they might like to work in. It is hoped most students in Year 10 and Year 12 will complete some form of work experience and there is support in finding this.
Backwell School uses the eight Gatsby Benchmarks as a guide to planning our careers provision. These benchmarks are:
1 A stable careers programme.
2 Learning from labour market information.
3 Addressing the needs of all students.
4 Linking curriculum learning to careers.
5 Encounters with employers and employees.
6 Experiences of the workplace.
7 Encounters with further and higher education.
8 Personal guidance.
As part of our commitment to informing our students of the full range of learning and training pathways on offer to them, we are happy to consider requests from training, apprenticeship and vocational education providers to speak to students.
