  • GCSE Results 2026

    Published 20/08/26

Proud of Our Students, Proud of Our Community, Proud to Be Backwell

Today, we are delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our Year 11 students as they receive their GCSE results. These results reflect not only academic success, but also the resilience, determination and character that this year group has demonstrated throughout their time at Backwell.

We are incredibly proud of all that our students have accomplished. Their commitment to learning, willingness to embrace challenges and support for one another have embodied our school values of being Kind, Curious and Ambitious. These qualities have enabled them to achieve excellent outcomes and prepare confidently for their next steps.

This year's results are particularly pleasing. 10% of students achieved a remarkable set of results consisting entirely of Grade 8s and above, while 22% of students secured all Grade 7s and above. Across the year group, the average Attainment 8 grade was 5.25, reflecting strong performance across a broad range of subjects. In addition, 33% of all grades awarded were at Grades 9-7, 78% were at Grades 9-5, and 94% were at Grades 9-4.

These achievements are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, but they are also the result of a collective effort. I would like to thank our exceptional staff, whose expertise, care and unwavering commitment have supported students every step of the way. Their passion for education and belief in every young person have been instrumental in helping our students realise their potential.

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to parents and carers. The encouragement, guidance and support provided at home have played a vital role in these successes. Strong partnerships between school and families are at the heart of student achievement, and we are thankful for the trust and support shown throughout the years.

We are delighted that the majority of our Year 11 students will be returning to Backwell to continue their studies in the Sixth Form, and we look forward to supporting them in the next stage of their educational journey. We also extend our warmest congratulations and best wishes to those students embarking on apprenticeships, college courses and other exciting opportunities locally. We know they will continue to thrive and make a positive contribution to their communities.

As we celebrate today's results, we do so with immense pride in this exceptional year group and everyone who has contributed to their success. Their achievements reflect not only academic excellence, but the strength of our community and the values that underpin everything we do.

Congratulations, Year 11. We are incredibly proud of you. Wherever your next steps may lead, we wish you every success for the future, and always remember, ‘We are Backwell’.

  • Spelling Bee Success!

    Published 08/05/26

We are delighted to celebrate the success of our students at the Modern Foreign Language Spelling Bee regional final, held at Kingswood School in Bath. Amy O (Spanish), Ellis P and Georgie P (both French) competed against schools from across the region in what was a very tough competition, including a tense tie‑break.

Thanks to their hard work, commitment and impressive language skills, Georgie finished 2nd in French, Ellis 3rd in French, and Amy 3rd in Spanish.

As a result, all three students have qualified for the national final at the University of Cambridge in June — a fantastic achievement. Congratulations to them all and to the MFL team for their support.

  • Footloose - Sixth Form Production Success

    Published 21/01/26

    WOW! What a show!

Congratulations to our incredible, talented Sixth Form students on their performance of 'Footloose' last week.

This really was an utterly fabulous show, which gave such an uplifting feeling to beat those January blues.

Every aspect of the production was organised and completed by the Sixth Form students, with absolute minimal support from staff. Direction, Choreography, Musical Direction, Blocking, Staging, Costume, Make-up, Mics and technical direction, lighting and so, so much more.

This is such an incredible learning opportunity for our students. We have several very happy Sixth Form members in school this week.

Team Footloose, we are very proud of you all.

  • New 3G Pitch

    Published 09/01/26

We are delighted to see our new 3G astroturf pitch officially open for student use. This fantastic facility further enhances our already outstanding PE curriculum, and will no doubt be welcomed by many families as we move lessons from muddy grass to artificial turf over the coming weeks! It was also wonderful to see the pitch being used by Backwell Juniors Football Club on Tuesday evening. We very much see this as a community facility that we can all be proud of, and we look forward to welcoming more local groups to the school in the weeks ahead.

We are hugely grateful to our specialist contractors, S&C Slatter, for their expertise in creating this fantastic space for both our school and the wider community to enjoy.
