Bake Off 2023!

The 2023 Backwell Bake Off Final was hosted this week after an intense month of baking! The competition saw 18 Key Stage 3 students take part in three rounds to show off their baking skills in the hope to make it to the Final round this week.

Round 1 - Signature Challenge

Students were challenged to make cupcakes with their own signature flavours and decorations. 1st place was awarded to Eleanor J for her creative strawberry milkshake cupcakes.

Round 2 - Technical Challenge

Students demonstrated their pastry skills by making traditional shortbread. Leon M took 1st place with his family shortbread recipe.

Round 3 - Showstopper Challenge

The challenge was to make scones however they could not be plain! We had some fantastic entries, everything from cranberry and white chocolate to pesto and sun-dried tomato scones. 1st place was awarded to Josie C for her deliciously traditional sultana and cherry scones.

After careful consideration and help from guest judges including Mr Ray and Mrs Lewis, 8 students were selected to continue into the Final round which took place on Monday 17 July. Students were given an open brief of making a handheld pastry of their choice, this could be sweet or savoury.

I would like to thank all 18 students for taking part and a special mention to the eight finalists. The winners of The 2023 Backwell Bake Off are:

  • 1st Place - Eleanor J
  • 2nd Place - Theo W
  • 3rd Place - Laila O
