Pupil Premium
Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011.
This is a grant given to schools to close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers, and to support pupils with parents in the armed forces (this part of it is known as the service premium).
Eligibility for the Pupil Premium Grant
The following children are eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant:
-
Children eligible for Free School Meals
-
Children who have received Free School Meals in the last six years
-
Looked-after children
-
Children who were previously looked-after, but have left care through a Special Guardianship Order, a Residence Order or Child Arrangements Order.
What are our aims for the Pupil Premium Grant?
The aim is to identify and implement strategies that help to increase social mobility and reduce the attainment gap between the most and least disadvantaged pupils nationally. This can be seen in the Pupil Premium Charter created by the school.
Strategy
The school's strategies for using the grants can be read in the reports below. The Department for Education acknowledges that it is for schools to determine how the grants are used, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.
We review these strategies during the course of the academic year and assess their impact both in terms of strategy and spending.
Raising the achievement of Pupil Premium students to at least expected progress involves a variety of support including:
-
Provision to raise literacy and numeracy levels.
-
Providing social and emotional support/interventions to improve attendance and behaviour.
-
Enhanced/ improved cultural trips, activities, extracurricular activities and support with uniform, resources etc.
-
Personalised 'pen portraits' and plans for support.
Key Barriers to Learning
The barriers and challenges disadvantaged pupils face are complex and varied; there is no single difficulty faced by all. However, we have identified several barriers that we believe are particularly relevant to disadvantaged children in our context, including:
- Literacy and numeracy
-
Completion of home learning
-
Attendance
-
Complex social and emotional needs
Information for Parents
The School has tried to communicate more clearly with regard to the support offered and, as such, publishes a Pupil Premium Offer (reviewed yearly) and a timeline of key events. Further information relating to Pupil Premium is published in the weekly email bulletin and through letters.
